Cold War Funnies

Stiff figures abound in this time capsule disguised as an old comic book. Fightin' Five was never my "fightin' fave" Charlton Action Hero book, but the eight page back-up strip is a treat - the debut of "The Peacemaker" by Pat Boyette and Joe Gill.
Fightin' Five 40

Still kinda stiff on the art, but since this issue has a roll-call of all the major villains from the series, we'll let that slide....
And hey, both books feature femme fatales in the best Cold War tradition!

KIRBY KARDZ!

See? On the quick, more Kirby!

Kirby's Speak-Out Series!

"The King" hit DC with his creative juices running, expanding (seemingly) in all directions at once... and in adittion to the stellar books seen below, he also did -

Jack Kirby's Speak-Out Series!?!

Like this promotional poster did any good against indifferent news-stand distibution.

Excellent art in both these issues!

... and let's not forget those wacky collage pages!

Spirit World

Days of the Mob also has a supernatural theme running through it. Check 'em out!

Dr. Solar vs The Blue Beetle!

Well, so much for my big comeback! Hah! Kinda fizzled out there for a mo'.....
Anyway, here's what I think is a nifty idea that I slapped together up above, showing the two gentlemen in question in a hypothetical face-off.

As erudite panel-ologists, we are concerned with loftier ideals in the appreciation of the finer aspects of the artform. These two issues, however, fall at the lower end of the spectrum, but are fun none-the-less. Who cares about Marvel and DC when you could be reading Charlton and Gold Key!

Captain 3D.... in 2D!

Ah yes, the "Fabulous 50's" and the faddish-ness of that age! The hula-hoop, for example... or 3D. Everybody went 3D CRAZY, trying to cash in on the fleeting phenomena! Harvey Comics were no exeption, and enter Joe Simon and Jack Kirby, and the creation of Captain 3D.

What i've done is turn this book into greyscale 2D by dropping out the reds. It's a little spotty in places, but hey... you tell me! Personally I think it turned out pretty good.....
